A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a maroon Greek cross surmounting a gold square and bearing at its center a heraldic fountain encircled by a continuous red scroll divided in three folds and inscribed "HERE TO CARE" in gold letters.
Maroon and white are the colors used for the Army Medical Department. The cross, a symbol for aid and assistance refers to the basic mission of the Hospital. The gold square background stands for excellence, perfection, equality and fairness and the water symbol is symbolic of healing. The gold color further alludes to the sobriquet of the State of California and the heraldic fountain is allusive to the San Francisco Bay, the home area and present location of the organization.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 27 February 1975.
